How to use JSON Editor
- Open a .json file, or switch the editor into code mode and paste - the tree, form, text and view modes are all available from the editor itself.
- Press Beautify to indent or Minify to collapse the document - either one moves the editor into code mode, where the change of formatting is actually visible - and use the JSON Tools row to Sort Keys, Remove Empty Values, Validate or expand and collapse branches.
- After a destructive step, press the Undo button that appears in the same row to put the document back as it was.
- Watch JSON Statistics update as you edit: keys, arrays, objects, strings, numbers and byte size.
- Export as JSON, CSV, YAML or XML when the document is finished, or Copy the text straight into your editor.
What JSON Editor actually does to your file
This is the one JSON page where you edit the data rather than convert it once, so it suits reshaping a config file or inspecting a large response without pasting it into an IDE. The exports keep every value but not every shape: the CSV writer puts a nested object or array into one cell as JSON text, and the XML writer rewrites names that XML cannot use as elements - a space or a leading digit becomes an underscore - under a single <root> element whose shape differs from what the dedicated JSON to XML page produces. Remove Empty Values rewrites the document by dropping keys outright, which is why Undo appears next to it - but Undo only covers the last action on this page, so keep a copy of the original if those keys carry meaning in your schema.
JSON Editor FAQ
What does JSON Editor do?
Easily format, validate, and edit JSON data online. Powerful JSON checker, beautifier, minifier, and viewer – all in one free tool.
Which files work with JSON Editor?
This category commonly supports JSON, YAML, XML, and CSV. Use the accepted file types shown in the uploader, because support varies by browser and by the engine behind each tool.
What can I change with this tool?
The controls on this page define the scope. Anything the format supports but the tool does not expose will be left as it came in.
Will my original file be changed?
No. You paste text or open a file to read it, the result appears in the other pane, and only what you copy or download leaves the page.
How is my file processed?
It is not uploaded. The processing is done locally by the parser bundled with this page, so the practical ceiling is your device's memory and the limit shown beside the uploader - no queue, no account, no copy on a server.
Is the JSON Editor free?
Yes. The JSON Editor is free with no trial limit, subscription, or watermark on downloads. You can use it for personal and commercial projects without creating an account.
